Butler Tech Aviation Education Hangar Celebrates Groundbreaking

MIDDLETOWN, OH — Skanska, a global construction and development firm, announces the groundbreaking of the Butler Tech Aviation Education Hangar at the Middletown Airport. The ceremony marked the official start of construction on a facility that will provide students with hands-on career technical education in aviation and related fields.

The groundbreaking event saw a turnout of about 200 attendees, including state and local political figures, Butler Tech students, aviation-related businesses, and members of the media. The ceremony highlights the importance of this new facility in shaping the future workforce in the aviation industry.

Skanska is serving as the construction manager and emersion DESIGN is the architect for the 28,000-square-foot hangar, which will include 8,500 square feet of hangar space and additional space dedicated to offices, classrooms, and labs. The facility is designed to support Butler Tech’s aviation career pathways, providing students with hands-on learning experiences in aviation maintenance, engineering, private piloting, and unmanned aircraft systems.

“We are honored to once again partner with Butler Tech and Emersion Design on this exciting project,” said Chris Hopper, Executive Vice President and General Manager for Skanska USA Building. “This educational hangar represents a significant investment in the future of aviation education and workforce development, providing students with the skills they need to excel in a rapidly growing industry.”

The project has support from Butler County Commissioners, the City of Middletown, JobsOhio, and REDI Cincinnati.

The $15 million facility is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the skills gap in the aviation sector, offering students advanced training opportunities in a real-world environment. Once completed, the hangar will serve as a hub for aviation education in the region, fostering innovation and preparing students for careers in the field. Middletown Airport's location, situated close to major airports and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, provides students with chances to gain knowledge from industry experts and participate in hands-on aviation experiences.
