BALTIMORE, MD — Mueller Associates has been selected to provide mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services for the modernization of the historic Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, a multi-year design project that will transform galleries and public spaces and enable the museum to address a significant increase in attendance in recent years. Mueller joins the architectural firms of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Selldorf Architects (SOM|Selldorf) for the project, which will include a complete rehabilitation of the interior and plaza, improved access, and updated infrastructure including building systems.

The modernization will enable the Hirshhorn to support new and diverse art programming well into the future. The building will be more sustainable and energy-efficient, with robust and resilient building systems. The work follows two major phases of modernization to the museum’s campus, which have included exterior upgrades, a new roof, and redesign of the sculpture garden. The interior renovation will begin with the presentation of a visioning document in anticipation of SOM|Selldorf’s concept design, which will include public engagement.
